Beyond Audit
Overview
Welcome to the Beyond Audit section of the website. Improving quality within the NHS is a high priority. Considerable time and resources are spent on quality improvement but these projects rarely include junior doctors. Junior doctors though, are at the forefront of service delivery and make decisions that have significant impact on patient outcomes. The London Deanery has established an innovative project to support trusts in engaging junior doctors in quality improvement initiatives. This will allow all doctors training in London to develop the leadership skills that they need to shape the healthcare service that they will inherit (please see Beyond Audit poster on the right of the page).
A useful template is also available on the right of the page which can be followed/adapted by those interested in organising a Quality and Improvement project. A PDSA (Plan, Do, Study & Act) worksheet is also available on the right, which will help you set the goals you wish to achieve.
How to implement a quality improvement project within your organisation
If you are interested in leading Quality Improvement Projects in your Trust, please find the PowerPoint slides which we use as a basis for delivering these workshops available as a download, on the right of this page. A facilitaor pack on how to deliver a QIP workshop will follow shortly.
General Practice vocational training scheme workshops
The 2011-12 'Darzi' Fellows in Clinical Leadership have developed a programme of workshops on leadership and quality improvement which are being offered to all vocational training schemes across London. These can be a half-day release session or a full day session for residential programmes and are facilitated by the Darzi fellows.
Please contact Catriona Chatfield (catriona.chatfield@londondeanery.ac.uk) if you are a Programme Director of a scheme interested in arranging a session for your programme or if you would like some further information. We may also be able to provide sessions to trainer's groups, subject to availability.
Deanery-based faculty development
We have run two half day workshops to help Educational Supervisors better support their trainees in undertaking quality improvement projects. These workshops have now been incorporated into the Clinical Leadership for the Educational Supervisor (CLES) full day sessions.
The aims of this section of the CLES course are to:
* Provide an opportunity for Educational Supervisors to explore how they may support trainees in undertaking quality improvement projects
* Further the understanding of Educational Supervisors in quality improvement in the NHS and the role that clinicians can and should play
* Further the understanding of educational supervisors about the role of junior doctor led audit and how this can fit within a quality improvement approach
If you are interested in booking a place on the CLES course and to view a list of dates this course will be taking place, please visit our online shop.
Web-based forum and resources
An online resource providing guidance for trainees, supervisors and trusts. This will include a forum space for discussing projects and sharing ideas and a store for project summaries.
Conference
We have recently succesfully held our Inaugural London Conference to raise the profile of Junior Doctor-led Quality Improvement projects and to give trainees a chance to present their projects. Please see the Inaugural London Conference tab on the left for further details.
Wider stakeholder engagement
Working with Health Foundation, HQIP, Royal Colleges, Trust Boards, King’s Fund, BMJ learning.
Evaluation
Ongoing work to evaluate individual work-streams and to look at the overall impact of the project itself on quality improvement in the NHS in London.
